Join an exciting research journey through Mirning Sea Country

WA Mirning People Aboriginal Corporation (WAMPAC) invites Expressions of Interest from Mirning community members to take part in an exciting cultural and science voyage on the research vessel MRV Ngerin in November 2025.

WA Mirning People Aboriginal Corporation (WAMPAC) is offering a community member the chance to take part in hands-on marine research in the Mirning Marine Park.

This unique opportunity will give you a taste of what it’s like to work as a marine ranger, experiencing the kinds of activities rangers do to look after Sea Country.

If you’ve ever been curious about becoming a ranger or simply want to learn more about caring for Mirning Sea Country this is your chance to get involved.

This opportunity comes through the Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation’s (ETNTAC) successful national grant application as part of their Wudjari Ancient Coastlines (WAC) program . This initiative is made possible through funding from the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) to the Southern Coastal Research Vessel Fleet.

Tjaltjraak have invited WAMPAC representatives to take part, creating space for Mirning people to gain knowledge and experience from this important work with Kepa Kurl Wudjari people.

 It is an exciting opportunity for Aboriginal people from neighbouring groups to come together on Sea Country, to build skills, share knowledge, and learn from each other while working alongside marine specialists. 

We believe there is strong potential in working with our cultural neighbours and supporting one another in looking after Country and Sea Country.

Voyage Date for Mirning Representatives

  • 4 to 7 of November (dates pending final confirmation) – Port Adelaide to Bandy Creek, 4 days/3 nights onboard. Arriving in Port Adelaide the day before departure.

  • Travel, food, accommodation and training costs are fully covered.

Participants will gain supervised training and experience in areas such as:

  • Vessel operations (steering, navigation, safety checks, rope work)

  • Marine science sampling (water, sediments, eDNA, video surveys)

  • Weather and marine mammal observations

Eligibility

We are seeking Mirning Traditional Owners who:

  • Are 18 years or older

  • Have an interest in caring for Country and Sea Country

  • Are willing to learn new skills and work in a team environment

  • Can commit to the voyage dates listed above
