We want to inform you that the Western Green Energy Hub has submitted its first referral to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) as part of its mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for its proposed project on Mirning Country.
What is an Environmental Impact Assessment?
An Environmental Impact Assessment is a crucial process the state government uses to determine if a proposed development will significantly impact the environment, including land, water, air, biodiversity, and community well-being.
The EPA is seeking public feedback on the Western Green Energy Hub proposal, specifically about the level of environmental assessment required.
Options for Level of Assessment
There are four options for the level of environmental assessment
Do Not Assess: No further environmental assessment required due to minimal environmental impact.
Assess – Referral Information: Review based on information in the initial referral from Western Green Energy Hub.
Assess – Environmental Review (No Public Review): A detailed review conducted without public input.
Assess – Public Environmental Review: Full environmental assessment with public consultation.
Mirning Traditional Lands Aboriginal Corporation (MTLAC) is submitting feedback that the EPA should assess the proposal as a Public Environmental Review because of:
The size of the project footprint on Mirning Country.
The important environmental and cultural values in the area.
We believe this thorough assessment will allow our community to actively participate in the process and ensure the EPA considers all impacts carefully. In our submission we are also requesting the longest possible public review period (12 weeks) to allow the community ample time to review and respond to the Western Green Energy Hub’s final report
